NEW YORK CITY CULINARY INSTITUTE

PROMPT
Located on the corner of 10th street and 14th avenue in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, this institute is a cooking school by day and an eating establishment by night. Inspired by Piet Mondrian’s “Broadway Boogie Woogie,” the NYC Culinary Institute employs voids and catwalks on each of its five levels to let the smells and sounds of a cooking school permeate through the space. By pumping in water from the Hudson, the geo-thermal basement level is heated and cooled naturally and used as storage for meats and other perishables. Meanwhile, fish tanks, a cafe, spritz bar, and various commissaries make up the program on street level. The top level provides candlelit dining with panoramic views overlooking the Hudson, accompanied by a suspended balcony providing outdoor seating.
